Stob Ban, Stob Choire Claurigh and Stob Coire an Laoigh are the key ones here, according to old Hector Munro
Preparation is everything, quality food on the Saturday night to stoke us up for the big walk. Didn't have any fish. |
And chill. |
Sunday morning service - weird or what? |
Up the path to Corrour again - Not sure if I posted the pictures from the last time we did this path which are here, but the path is still just as long. |
View back down to Glen Spean |
Our initial target, Stob Ban. Stob Ban is a remote peak, far distant from any main road and hidden behind its higher neighbours. It lies at the east end of the Grey Corries ridge, separated from the rest of this range by an 800m col, and it is from viewpoints near the head of Glen Nevis or in the Lairig Leacach that one gets the best views of this solitary conical peak. So says my source! This is from the latter viewpoint.

Stob Ban, and the bothy at Lairig Leacach and a link to our previous trek into here. |
|
Climbing up into the corrie below Stob Ban - brilliant. |
|
And looking East up Glen Spean, with Stob a'Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain on the right, towering above Loch Treig |
|
Stob Ban gets closer, and more daunting, |
|
And the views East keep getting better. At the col between Stob Ban and Stob Choire Claurigh. |
|
At this point the view West got pretty good too. The Mamores at the back, and Sgurr Chonnich Mor to the centre right, with our final target Stob Coire an Laoigh and then the second hill Stob Choire Claurigh on the right. Beautiful.
Closer view of the ridge between Stob Coire an Laoigh and then the second hill Stob Choire Claurigh |

Scree slopes of Stob Ban |
Very steep scree slopes |
More steep scree. |

OH YES, this is what it is all about. Need to pan as it's a big picture. From the top of Stob Ban. So many! To the left I have no idea but probably down to Glencoe, straight ahead is my beloved Mamores, Sgurr Eilde Mor then to the right Binnein Mor, An Gearnach and all the rest, and on the right of Glen Nevis we see Sgurr Chonnich Mor and behind that Aonoch Beag, and on the right the ridge we tackled next
A little lochan on the bealach, looking to the Mamores and Sgurr Chonnich Mor/Stob Choire Claurigh on the right. |
Stob Ban, just done that one. |
Look, the Mamores - my favourite |

Stob Ban starts to look smaller |
|
The top of Stob Choire Claurigh, and the mist descends. |
Off we go, the wrong way, but all these ridges looked the same. This was the scariest one though. |
Just come down that, now need to go back up as the right way is over there |
|
That's more like it. The rest of the ridge, with Stob Coire an Laoigh off there on the left, and behind on the left the Mamores, and to the right the Aonaoch Beag/Mhor ridge and behind that old Nevis herself |
|
|
Just fantastic |

Done that. Most impressive? |
|
And down there is little Stob Ban |
Still a bit to go. |
Aonach Beag, Nevis and Aonoch Mhor looking good, but we are going up the one in the middle |
|
What a smashing day. Looking back again, with Stob Choire Claurigh that we've just done on the left, Stob Coire Easian and Stob a'Choire Mheachoin in the distance, with Stob Coire Sgriodain behind them, and Stob Ban down there on the right. |
|
From another top along the ridge |
Finally, the top of Stob Coire an Laoigh, and a bit of mist as you'd expect |

Looking back - what a great ridge. |
|
And back to reality, and the long walk back to the car in the middle distance somewhere |
