First Impressions of the Mamores - Once you start it's hard to stop.
Sgurr Eilde Mor, Binnein Beag, Binnein Mor and Na Gruagaichearn
The sun shone, and we left Kinlochleven in high spirits, helped by driving 300m up the hill to the Mamore Lodge as our starting point. |
Mamore Lodge is the white building down there, so still had to climb a fair bit! |
Na Gruagaichean or the spur of Binnein Mor. For another day we thought. |
First sight of the top of Sgurr Eilde Mor, old fogies far behind. |
Probably Stob Coire Easain above Loch Treig on the left, but if you know better please let me know. |
|
Ascending from Loch Eilde Mor - thought this was a quicker route. First munro in front. |
First view of the coire below Binnein Mor |
Start of the "wow" factor - Aonoach Eagach ridge and Bidean nam Bain on the horizon. |
|
Na Gruagaichean in the middle left, and Binnein Mor on the right, still thinking of them for another day. |
Steep as ... And rocky but no beach |

Still rocky and steep |
Top of Sgurr Eilde More. What do we fancy next? |
|
Choice. Na Gruagaichean to the left, a bit far, Binnein Mor in the middle, 100 meters above where we are, with a big drop between us, or that "little" hill (Binnein Beag) on the right? And further off is Nevis, Carn Mor Dearg, the Aonachs and Sgurr Choinnich Mor.
Looks easy enough to give us two munros in one day! Start of the Nevis range behind perhaps make this look less significant? |
|
So before we descended took a quick snap of Na Gruagaichean and Binnein Mor for future reference. Looked to big for today. |
|
Ben Nevis was also looking good - must pop up there soon. |

Binnein Beag starts to look slightly more challenging |
|
And now we can see on the left Sgurr Eilde Mor where the oldies caught up with us again, across the beleach to the right is the nameless spur, then the peak of Binnein Mor, lying between us and the car! We began to realise the quickest way home was over rather than round it. We chose the left hand ridge to beat the oldies, and it worked.
Binnein Beag is quite rocky. |
Top number two, looking to Ben Nevis and other stuff. |
Looking back, we have done Sgurr Eilde Mor on the left, and Binnein Mor on the right lies between us and the pub, so we are up there next, over the ridge on the middle right. |
|
Binnein Mor and the conventional route up the right hand side |
North up to Nevis etc. |
Just done that one, Beag indeed. |
Sgurr Eilde Mor that we did first looks fairly impressive. |
So just up there, and we are half way home. |
|
The top of Binnein Mor, a narrow place. Looking North to Nevis etc |
And looking North West to Binnein Beag that we have just done, with the Grey Corries behind - Sgurr Choinnich Mor and the rest. |
On top of the world. First munro on the left. This is the highest one for a while! |
|
Either we go back down the glen to the left and round all these hills, or over the top on the left and the munro in the middle - no brainer really! |
|
It was a scary munro top.

Looking back to Binnein Mor |
|
|
Been up the hill on the left, and Sgurr Eilde Mor above Mark on the right, and another (behind somewhere). Rock and roll. |
|
Top four, and lots of hills to get names for in the future - probably Am Bodach, if I can still read straight, is the biggest one there, with Stob Ban and Sgurr a' Mhaim to the right. |
|
Descent back to Kinlochleven. |
