The West Highland Way, May 2011

Day Seven: Kinlochleven to Fort William - 14 miles

The final day, the final soaking.

By the Mamores and under Nevis.  A fair climb up, and a long walk home.

And then a train all the way back down the track!

Final picture in the reception of the Macdonald Hotel in Kinlochleven.  Second shelf says it all (blister pads, foot cream and midgie repellent)!

Heading up the hill from Kinlochleven, nearly 81 miles done.

Out of the trees, looking back to Kinlochleven, and behind that the shoulder we came over yesterday.

Another perfect day, and some wet walkers.

They think they have passed me now!  Looking up to the Lairigmor (Big Pass) that we headed through.

A drier moment.

Tour leader scents the end is only nine miles away.

Looking back down the Lairigmor...

..and forward to the next mile or so, heading up to the right.

Across the burn, looking back

Further up, looking backward.  Too much rain the other way.

Looking back after rounding the corner, the wind was at our back, and only eight miles to go.

Familiar WHW marker post suggest time to stop for a dram.

Duncan and Iain dutifully stopping for a dram

Six miles to go we found an informative board.  If you want to know what it says, walk the path or ask Martin.

From this point we could see Lochan Da Bhra, but the monster didn't appear

Looking back up the track from the same point.

And the way forward from here.

Up we go again, just over five miles to go.

Another dry moment.  We have come round the left hand shoulder. Lochan Da Bhra on the right.

Rather large deforested climb (the last climb), only four miles to go.

From the top of the last climb.  Not the most scenic bit!

A little detour to check out the vitrified fort.  400m!

This is a vitrified fort.  Mmmmm!  Still the side of Ben Nevis looked nice.

You also could see down Glen Nevis and across to Corpach

Long way down the the bottom

From the North lip of the fort, you can just see the top of the last de-forested climb mid-right, and mid-left is the way we have just come.

Could even seen Stob Ban and Sgurr a'Mhaim in the Mamores from here.  Most impressive.

Down there is the bottom of the last climb.

And here is most of that climb in full.  We have already covered from behind the hill on the left to past                                  the track on the right. Not bad after 80 miles in the last six days.

Closer

Looking back from the track, two miles to go

The road, again looking back up to where we have been on the left.  One mile to go.

Result.  This is what we have been aiming for for 94 miles.

Picture call.

Same time next year?

After that I think we deserved a pint.
