A North Mullardoch Adventure.
Thanks to Stuart for the additional pics and video clips. His pics are marked *, and are much bigger if you click on them. Well worth a click.
Ever walked so far into the wild that there was no way back..... (until tomorrow!). Yes, this is the Loch Mullardoch walk we did in May 2002. Just takes some unfit guys who drink too much to march out there and do it. What???
Preparation and planning is all! |
Before we started. The view East from the Loch Mullardoch dam. |
Loch Mullardoch in all it's splendour at lunchtime. Off we go. (Sorry I forgot to use the alarm so we could get up earlier?..... Not!) |
* Map... check, Jacket...check. Water...check. No excuses now. |
Is that the bealach up there? 3.p.m. and no sign of the trig point? |
Spot of light-weight lunch before we push on. Looking back down the Glas Tol (whatever that is?) |
And then we relaxed for the night. Our bealach. And up there is Sgurr na Lapaich, trying to taunt us through the mist. |
The swirling mist
The top of the hill. Sgurr na Lapaich is conquered. About 5 p.m. |
* Mark phones Elaine to check which hills we are climbing - no, honestly! |
* We are the boys - Munro number one. |
| Here hopefully is a little video lesson in map reading at the top | ||
Jealous yet? |
First view of the campsite on the way back down. |
The weather is great now. I can see a tent. |
* Our little home from home. |
From the rise above our campsite we could see this. Our final hill, Carn nan Gobhar on the left, Loch Tuill Bhearnach and Toll Creagach in the distance. Awesome. |
* So this is dinner! |
And this is the animated version of the dinner thing on the left.
Still no sign of the hilltop though. But plenty of grey rock, and our two tents. |
Forget the top, someone said "It's time for more food". |
* A view of rock from the tent!!! |
* Morning has broken |
* Breakfast (or lunch, they all look the same) |
Good morning, looking to Loch Mor, on the westbound descent from Sgurr na Lapaich |
Glimpses of what is out there. |
* Looking one way or another - hills in the mist as usual |
* Looking South from the shoulder of the Greagan Toll. Loch Mullardoch on the right. |
* And looking North from the same spot, maybe! |
* Up we go |
* More up! |
So the next munro is over there? Start of the Greagan Toll an Lochain, leading to the An Riabhachan ridge. |
Oooohhhhhh bugger. We have to go all the way back over there to get the tents. Sgurr na Lapaich from the start of the An Riabhachan ridge. |
Sorry guy's, the top is over there.
* The second Munro. |
Here we are at the highest point of the An Riabhachan ridge. Our second munro of the weekend. We could see Skye from here. |
* Lots of hills - North or South perhaps |
* Some hills are bigger than others. No ideas which way this is, any one got any ideas? Maybe looking to the bottom of Loch Mullardoch from somewhere high up? That could be the North West side of Mullach na Dheiragain on the left. |
* We have done that one, so where next? |
So we just need to climb down this ridge here, back up to that bealach below Sgurr na Lapaich , then down to collect all our gear, then up another munro and down Coire an t-sith, before we can get home. And it is worth every minute of pain, believe me. |
Looking back to An Riabhachain on the right. Loch Mullardoch is just peeking out down the Alt Socrach valley. |
Across the bealach below Sgurr na Lapaich for the last time. We could see the Beauly Firth from here. |
* Looking down from the top of the bealach. Can you see the tents yet? |
* And looking across to Carn nan Gobhar, our last hill for the day. The tents are still there. |
* From the top of Carn nan Gobhar - looking back to Loch Tuill Bhearnach, our campsite, and Sgur na Lapaich on the right. Been there, done that. |
The top of Carn nan Gobhar - looking back to Loch Tuill Bhearnach, our campsite, and Sgur na Lapaich on the right. Been there, done that. Yes I know it is almost the same as the last one. |
* Mountains |
* The top of Carn nan Gobhar, at last. |
* Loch Mullardoch -still to walk back there, and up to the dam before we can go home.
And my intrepid companions. Just the descent down the Coire an t-sith and the Alt Mullardoch valley to get back to the dam, somewhere behind Mark
* Mountain men |
* Mountain men? Loch Mullardoch dam almost reached. |
I reckon it was a seventeen mile round trip, with three munros and many bealachs. And heavy packs. And the best way to spend a weekend (in hindsight).
Fantastic. What a good weekend's work
